The Old Schraalenburgh Farm

Across Old Hook Road from the Demaree house and barn is the Homestead’s working farm, Old Schraalenburgh Farm. These 14 acres have been continuously farmed since the 18th century. Abram Demaree himself farmed this land; when his son David took over, fresh produce would be loaded in a wagon that traveled up Closter Dock Road to the Hudson River, where it was then transported by sloop to New York City. In the early 1990s, the farmland was purchased by the Abram Demaree Homestead organization to grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that would then be donated to local food banks.

Every spring we plant corn, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, apples, blueberries, basil, garlic, and pumpkins, among other fruits and vegetables and flowers; in the summer and fall we harvest what we’ve grown. Produce is donated to local food banks and soup kitchens, and we also use what we grow in the food we prepare at the Farm Cafe. Flowers are sold fresh and dried, and we add them to our botanical products, like soaps and linen spray. What’s left over we sell directly to our customers, who appreciate locally grown, organic produce.

The roads surrounding our farm field are open to the public. Visitors are welcome—don’t forget to stop in and see our friendly chickens by the big red barn in the field! Our apiaries are also on the farm beyond the barn.
