It all started with this small stone Dutch colonial house. It’s unclear exactly when it was built, but historians date it back to the 1760s and even as early as 1720. In 1769, Abram Demaree bought the home and ran a general store and tavern at this intersection of two major roads beside the Hackensack River in rural Bergen County. His son David built the attached larger Federal-style house in 1809.

Fast forward to the 1970s, when a local group fought to save the homestead and had it added to the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, the house, barn, fields, and a farm stand cafe serving homemade, farm-fresh foods have been open to the public. All proceeds go to maintain the property as a nonprofit historical site, serene green space, and community resource.
